Car Seat 101

Choosing the correct car seat and using it correctly can be a daunting experience for parents and there are many potholes on the journey to a child using a seat belt only. In our experience, 8 out of 10 children are either in the incorrect car seat, the seat is incorrectly installed or incorrectly adjusted for the child’s size. This finding is underpinned by European car seat study groups: CASPER and CHILD. They have singled out non-use and misuse of car seats the biggest contributors to child fatalities and injuries in crashes.

With 7 years of hands-on experience in car seats and over 8500 car seats handed out through the Car Seats for Kids campaign; all of them stripped, cleaned, checked and re-assembled, we have a unique skill set in car seats. It is that knowledge that we would like to share with parents, new and accomplished, towards demystifying car seat choices and better compliance. Unfortunately, social media is awash with conflicting, incorrect and misleading advice. There are also so many car seats on the market that it becomes almost impossible for parents to make a choice.

We will assist parents to cut through all of that with good, well-researched information and through the sharing of our practical experience. All the while we keep the South African parent in mind. We have a unique set of circumstances in South Africa and we will always remain sensitive to that.

We cover every aspect of car seats: from crash dynamics and why we need car seats, how the industry is regulated, clarify terminology right through to the different groups of car seats. The aim of the workshop is to give parents the confidence to purchase the correct seat; for parents to understand the various aspects of a good car seat and then go and use it correctly. We will end the class with a demonstration of different installation methods and a Q&A session.

Classes will be small and every parent will get the individual attention required for their own set of circumstances. There is no one-size-fits-all solution in car seats. To add to that, things can get pretty complicated on social media. It is really not the best platform to address sensitive, individual issues. Our support for the families does not stop at the end of the workshop but will be ongoing as long as parents have questions and queries about car seats and safe driving with children.

The workshop is scheduled for every first Wednesday and second Saturday of each month. The cost is R500 per person. Bookings are essential. We need at least 5 parents booked to make up a class. Get a friend to book a seat and receive 10% off your fee.

The agenda for the workshop is as follows:

10:00 till 10:10 - Welcome and introduction
10:10 till 11:10 - First session
11:10 till 11:30 - Tea Break
11:30 till 12:30 - Second session
12:30 till 13:00 - Installations and Q&A

We want to give parents peace of mind when driving with their children. The roads are scary enough without having to worry if you did it right with your car seat or whether your child is safe with you in the car.

For more information on this uniquely South African campaign, please be in contact with me, I will happily assist.
